Lester Maddox glass From The Pickrick Restaurant Circa 1962. Maddox was the Atlanta restaurant owner who refused to integrate after passage of the Civil Rights Act. He was known to turn black customers away at the door with an axe handle. He sold these in his place and named them drumsticks. He was famous for his Sat. night special of two pieces of chicken for $0.25. He later became governor of the state of Georgia beating out (later to become governor) Jimmy Carter. After serving as governor, he was elected Lt. Governor (governors could not be re-elected in Georgia at that time). Ironically, this was under Carter, whom he did not care for. He was the governor who refused to allow Dr. Martin Luther King the honor of lying in state at the Georgia Capital in Atlanta. He later ran for President of the United States in 1976 against Jimmy Carter (who he previously defeated for governor, and later served as Lt. governor under) but only won one percent of the vote. In 1969 he received a Doctor of Laws degree from Bob Jones University in Greenville, S.C. despite completing his High School Degree thru correspondence courses. Although often remembered as a Segregationist, Maddox as Governor actually did much to promote blacks into positions of authority in Georgia. He was a man of many contradictions. Prior to his notorious fame during the Civil Rights movement, he gave out a very limited number of these Davey Crockett glasses to the children of his regular customers at the Pickrick Restaurant.
