I have for sale an 1844 presidential campaign token for Henry Clay, the Whig party candidate. Clay lost the election to James K. Polk. Clay was a lawyer & statesman. He represented Kentucky in both the United States Senate & House of Representatives. He also served as Secretary of State. Clay ran for president three times and lost all three times. This medal looks to be silver- or nickel-plated white metal, it is 1 3/8 inches in diameter and in a mid-grade circulated condition with a hole at the top rim. On the reverse, the dark areas you see, is from lack of plating. The obverse shows the raised bust of HENRY CLAY with his name. The reverse at the rim reads MANUFACTURES LET US ENCOURAGE OUR OWN. In the center it reads BORN - IN VIRGINIA AP 12 1777 - 1799 - OPPOSES THE - ALIEN & SEDITION LAW. - 1806 ELECTED TO U S SEN. - 1814 COMM. AT GHEN T. - 1821. COMPROMISE OF MISSO. OU. - 1833.
