Here's a 3.5" cello button from 1976 when Ronald Reagan was a serious challenge to sitting president Gerald Ford during the republican primaries. This challenge wasn't resolved until the Republican National Convention held in Kansas City, Missouri, when Ford got the nomination. But he lost in a squeaker to Jimmy Carter in November. Some people say it's because Regan failed to actively campaign for Ford. But if Ford had been re-elected, it likely wouldn't have led the Reagan blow-out over Carter in 1980. The neat thing about this pin is that it harkens back to some rather rare ones produced for Reagan when he was a 1968 presidential hopeful, which came in two different sizes. The design is most familiar to collectors in more common George Wallace and Lyndon Johnson 3.5" 1968 varieties. And then, in 2016, a smaller-sized button maker out of Michigan rendered a 3" pin in this design for Donald Trump. So, there's a 48-year (at least) history behind this style.
