Love him or hate him, Richard Nixon was a major player on this country's political stage from when he entered Congress in 1946 until he resigned the presidency in August of 1974. Problem was, many on the left simply loved to hate him. Tricky Dick actually did himself in over the Watergate mess while he ran for re-election in 1972 and the year-and-a-half after he was sworn for a second time. In 1960 when running for the first time, the experienced, two-term, sitting U.S. Vice-President took on a young Massachusetts U.S. Senator named John F, Kennedy in one of the closest elections in our history. Basically a tie, JFK won 49.72% to 49.55% and, with all the election irregularities reported out of Chicago, wonder if history might have been totally different if Nixon had made a challenge over the results. Just think if he'd have prevailed: No Dallas and no Watergate. After that squeaker, Nixon returned to California with Pat and their daughters and then got goaded into running for California governor in 1962 against Edmund "Pat" Brown. But darned if he didn't lose that election, too, and many thought his political career was finished, especially when, in his concession address, he pimped the media with his "you won't have Dick Nixon to kick around anymore" comment. But Nixon was even bringing in primary votes in the Barry Goldwater year of 1964 when he absolutely declined to run for president. Little did anyone realize that within a few years he'd be in the forefront again in a very crowded 1968 GOP field and come out with the nomination running along-side Spiro Agnew and then get elected twice. At the time, Rowan and Martin's "Laugh-In" was one of the top TV programs going, and a running gag was various skits with the "Sock it To Me" line and slapstick consequences. Famous people would film a cameo to get put on the show saying that line, including the GOP presidential nominee, Nixon. This plastic 2 1/8" pin was marketed to capitalize on that popular culture cliche, and this example has its original sales card. But, when we closed the lid on our scanner to do the reverse side, the damn pin clasp came off the button. DARN IT! So, you either need to force the clasp back into the notch on the back the button or, not risking the breaking of any plastic, simply use a bead of Super Glue to do some a-fixin on your new Nixon. This in nice shape but please look at our images to judge condition yourself so that you can be happy with your purchase. Shipping on this will be $5.50, well protected, first class with tracking.
