1868 Seymour & Blair MINT Woven Jugate Ribbon with original tassel present. 7.75 x 1.625 inches. Please excuse that my pictures are a little dark. The lighting was not good when I took these. I may eventually update with photos taken in proper lighting. This is THE classic Horatio Seymour & Frank Blair campaign ribbon. It is a jugate (one of very few for this campaign), it has the most beautiful design of all, it is WOVEN (a much more expensive and superior process than just printed onto silk; the design is created by woven threads and was manufactured by the famous Stephensgraph Company), it is multi-color, and it is in perfect condition! It is also a relative bargain in terms of price compared to other great 19th century ribbons! There is a very specific reason for this: 50 or 60 years ago there was a find of these Seymour-Blair ribbons in uncirculated near mint to mint condition. It is not known exactly how many were found but I’m guessing something in the neighborhood of 50. They have decades ago all found homes in advanced collections of course, but there were enough of them that the supply keeps the price reasonable - which is in my mind a gift to modern collectors - and m, all the better, most (including this one) are in MINT condition! If it were not for the discovery of a group of these so long ago, this ribbon would sell for many times what it does! In most hobbies, a truly great classic found in top shape in a reasonable quantity is exactly what collectors gravitate to. Stellar quality, spectacular condition and great price are a hard combination to find in any significant area of collecting! Screenshots above show the highest price that I have seen an example sell at auction ($1093 for the Merrill Berman Collection example at Heritage in 2015) as well as an impressive for being so long ago example, also at Heritage, that sold for $862 in 2004. I have this in my own collection and could not resist buying this at a great price when offered opportunity, but I don’t really need a duplicate so am offering for sale. If it were didn’t already have it…I’d buy it!
